His paper “A Risk-Based Signalling Compatibility Assessment Framework for Rail Infrastructure Maintenance Vehicles” shares a new pathway to demonstrate signalling performance in rail maintenance vehicles.
Q: What topic are you presenting on this year?
Chinmay: My presentation focuses on how infrastructure maintenance vehicles, such as tampers, ballast regulators and track stabilisers, can be assessed for dependable operation under signalling control.
These vehicles have historically been subject to restrictive operating arrangements, often because of limited assurance evidence rather than proven signalling incompatibility.
The presentation introduces a structured framework combining vehicle and design review, standards mapping, static and dynamic testing, comparison with accepted rolling stock, and risk-based engineering assessment to support an informed operational recommendation.
Q: Why did you choose this topic?
Chinmay: I chose this topic based on my direct experience assessing the signalling compatibility of several rolling stock types, including rail infrastructure maintenance vehicles.
Through this work, I see these vehicles being restricted because there is no clear or consistent pathway for demonstrating their signalling performance.
I want to share a practical approach that helps close this assurance gap by focusing on objective evidence rather than assuming that maintenance vehicles are automatically incompatible.
Q: What can attendees expect to learn from your presentation?
Chinmay: Attendees will learn how a signalling compatibility case for a non-standard maintenance vehicle can be developed using multiple evidence streams. This includes how to:
- identify the applicable signalling risks and requirements;
- assess practical train detection performance;
- and translate the evidence into a compliance position and operating recommendation.
Q: Why is it important to the greater rail industry?
Chinmay: Rail networks are becoming busier, while maintenance access windows are becoming increasingly constrained. Maintenance vehicles must therefore be able to move efficiently between worksites without introducing unacceptable signalling risk.
A structured compatibility assessment can help support more consistent decision-making, proportionate testing and greater use of applicable evidence from previous assessments or approvals.
Q: What else are you excited to see at CORE this year?
Chinmay: I am looking forward to networking with professionals from across the rail industry and attending a variety of technical sessions, particularly those covering train operations, signalling and communications. I am keen to gain insights into different projects, challenges and emerging approaches across these areas, and to learn from the experiences of others working throughout the industry.
