Ross Mitchell

Principal Consultant

Ross is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and a Certified Practicing Engineer. He has 47 years of experience in the Rail Industry both in Australia and Internationally in India, China, Canada and South Africa.

Ross has exceptional experience in the design, construction, assessment, maintenance and operation of railways. Over the course of his career in the rail industry he has been heavily involved in reviews and updates of rail standards and procedures for track and structures.

Track experience

From 1970, Ross has been heavily involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of railways whilst also responsible for track maintenance and renewal. In various senior engineering roles he was in charge of the design and construction of new track including assessing the requirements for under-track drainage.

While working for BHP, Ross was the track designer responsible for the reconstruction and replacement of existing track on the Mt Newman line. In addition, he was involved in assessment, installation and use of condition-monitoring sensors and systems to test and maintain the track.

Technical experience

Design

Ross has played a part in the design of new railway tracks and the challenges involved with them including the areas in which the tracks will be deployed.

Monitoring

Whilst working with BHP Iron Ore, Ross was responsible for the assessment, installation and condition monitoring of equipment used to maintain track.

Maintenance

Ross helped to develop new maintenance procedures on the Mt Newman railway line. This line is exposed to extreme weather events and loading conditions. These procedures were implemented to extend track life.

Safety

Ross has an extensive knowledge and understanding of safety procedures involving track operation as he has been involved in a number of derailment investigations and the development of strategies to reduce derailments.

Standard Development

Ross has been heavily involved in the design process of new standards and processes used in track maintenance. This has included writing, reviewing and approving the Australian Standards.
