HSR Rolling Stock Engineer

Job description

Are you looking to help Australia usher in a new era of high speed rail? We are expanding our team of engineers to contribute to our growing portfolio of transport projects. We’re currently seeking a talented Rolling Stock Engineer with a specialisation in High Speed Rail to join our dynamic and collaborative team in an advisory role.

As a senior engineer with international experience in high speed rail, you will play a pivotal role in the strategy, design, development and testing of engineering solutions for high speed rail projects. You will work closely with other engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure that rolling stock meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a new area of rail in Australia on cutting-edge projects that will shape the future of rail travel.

We are open to various working arrangements – from someone looking to move to Australia or consult remotely in a part-time capacity. We want someone eager to bring their ideas to the table and help us build something meaningful. Help us continue to deliver the confidence that drives progress in the rail industry.

The benefits

Our people are important to us, so we make sure there are great benefits and opportunities available to you:

  • Flexible working conditions (including remote work from abroad). We value in-office collaboration and mentorship, but we also recognise that life weaves through the workweek.
  • Professional development, including employer contribution towards up-skilling.
  • Career and role progression that is only limited by the skills and strengths you bring.
  • If you are based in Sydney, you will enjoy a central Surry Hills office space with frequent team lunches and social events

Job duties in a technical advisory role

  • Design and Development: Advise on the design and development of rolling stock components for high-speed trains, ensuring that they meet operational requirements and comply with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Testing and Validation: Advise on the testing and validation of HSR rolling stock systems, including evaluating performance, safety, reliability, and comfort. Provide technical recommendations based on test results.
  • Operations and Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to ensure integration and optimisation of rolling stock with other railway infrastructure components; advise on operational aspects of the project.
  • Maintenance and Upgrades: Contribute to the development of maintenance strategies and procedures for high-speed trains. Ensure that the rolling stock is continually improved for enhanced performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: Provide technical expertise for troubleshooting and resolving complex issues related to rolling stock systems.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure all rolling stock systems comply with relevant Australian safety standards, regulations, and industry best practices. Keep up-to-date with evolving high-speed rail regulations and technologies.
  • Innovation: Continuously seek ways to improve the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of rolling stock systems through research, design innovation, and the adoption of new technologies.

Skills and experience

To be successful for the role, you will need to have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in rolling stock engineering, with at least 3 years specialising in high-speed rail systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of high-speed rail technologies, rolling stock design, and railway operations.
  • Proven experience in the development and integration of rolling stock systems, including propulsion, braking, and aerodynamics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Familiarity with Australian and international railway standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., UIC, EN, AAR).
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
